Facts and Figures

The PostEurop GHG Reduction Programme was launched in June 2007 following mandate by the Environmental Working Group.

In 2007, it was estimated according to the Environmental Working Group that European public postal operators within PostEurop emits between 8 and 11 million tonnes of CO2 annually and approximately two-thirds are from EU-based operators.

In 2008, following setting-up of a proper protocol and measurement in place, it was reported that the total amount of CO2 emissions by 14 member operators amounted to 4.55 Mt of CO2.

In 2009, further development to the protocol and measurement driven by the Environmental specialists within the PostEurop Environmental Working Group showed a result of 4.49 Mt of CO2 emitted by 13 member operators.

In 2010,  the 16 GHG Reduction Programme members emitted a total of 4.27 Mt of CO2 from their 2009 activities.

Evolution Target

From 2007 to 2009, a reduction by 465 thousand of tonnes of CO2 was accounted for, meaning a collective reduction of 15%.

However, green electricity with a low emission factor was major contribution in achieving this result. Consequently, without considering the
reduction obtained thanks to green electricity, the result will be a lower reduction, that will require further alternative efforts in order to reach the target in 2012.

Reporting Members

16 PostEurop members have reported their 2009 Data. The remaining 11 GHG Reduction Programme members act as observers in the programme.
