Greenhouse Gas Reduction Programme
Greenhouse Gas Reduction Programme
The European postal sector, through the very nature of its activities, has an impact on the environment, mostly in the form of greenhouse gas emissions. Half of these CO2 emissions result from the use of road transport, with aviation and building energy usage also contributing significantly.
There is however considerable scope for improvement and as a vital sector of the European economy, the postal sector is committed to reducing CO2 emissions within the communities it serves, through working together and closely with customers, suppliers and other stakeholders.
In June 2007 PostEurop’s Environment Working Group launched the Greenhouse Gas Reduction Programme. Its aim is to develop the appropriate tools to measure and assess the reduction efforts of participating postal operators and to create synergies by exchanging best practices in this field.
The European Postal Operators in 2007, agreed to aim for an aggregated reduction of 10% by 2012.
The scope of the Programme will cover four key areas
1. Transport
2. Buildings and machinery
3. Eco-efficiency products
4. Procurement and use of renewable energy and low carbon fuels
